Your take on M&M was sooo valid!! It still makes me so mad when people talk shit about Jim, as if it isn't clear that he was incredibly protective of Freddie and wouldn't have done anything that could hurt him. The book was literally a way to say Freddie was a good, kind, generous person and he was so so so loved always despite what the press was saying

Thank you. What’s funny is that my initial takes on M&M, Jim, and Mary haven’t changed after 5 years; they’ve only been reinforced after years of reading more sources. I read that book without any priors or biases going in, and I saw nothing but a grieving man who wanted to cope with the loss of his husband, get his story out there into the world after having to hide their relationship for years. I thought Jim’s account oozed with fondness, and he gave us a picture of Freddie that was remarkably human, flawed and moody but loving, sweet, and generous, too. That was my first real glimpse into who Freddie as a person was, and Jim’s loving account is what got me hooked.

I stand by all of my original assessments, including my subsequent assertion that anyone who dislikes Mercury and Me shouldn’t be trusted; brain worms ALWAYS follow.

I think it was important for Jim to mention their sex life because the press were obsessed with portraying Freddie as some reckless sexual degenerate, as they did with all LGBT people. But then Jim completely shatters that narrative by saying, ‘no, our sex life was normal, like any other couple.’

People need to keep in mind that this was published only a few years after Freddie died, and these disrespectful stories were still circulating about him (and they still are to this day, because it makes them money.) If my partner was being slandered publicly, being portrayed as some sort of deviant, and they weren’t around to defend themselves, you bet your ass I’d be setting the record straight.

That’s a good point. I don’t know if that was his explicit intention, but in the face of endless stories which portrayed Freddie as a WiLd sex addict, Jim said they just had normal sex and Freddie thought of it as lovemaking from early on. The book was only published 2-3 years after Freddie died, and at a time when gay memoirs were not popular in the slightest; people forget how brave it was of Jim to even publish a book like that tbh
